The things required to install the rat blocker totally depend on the type of pipes used. For plastic pipes, the items required are only 1 set of nut & bolt whereas for clay pipes nothing much is required. A few other things are Protective gloves, Screwdriver & Spanners, Pliers and the Installation Pole (if it’s too deep to reach).

One must ensure that the Rat Blocker is installed at the correct drain outlet and in the downstream position. The Flaps must be facing towards the exit allowing water to flow but prevent pests from entering the drainage system. Another important thing to note is that the drain in which the ratblockers will be installed isn’t cracked or broken.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Install Rat Blockers

Rat blockers Installation Step 1: Unbox Item and Check Drains

Unbox the rat blocker. Find your property’s manhole or the inspection chamber. If you are sharing a drain and need to identify the the correct drain then follow these steps:

Open the manhole / inspection chamber.
Ask someone to flush the toilet or turn on the tap.
Check for the drain where you saw the liquid flow last. That is the drainage for your property to install.

What does the Nut and Bolt do?

The Nut and Bolt, they have 3 purposes, so it’s usually important to have it screwed on.
1) Work as a handling device to take the device out of the drainage outlet. for example, when you need to do drain clearance or maintenance.
2) Work as a stopper to prevent device moving further inside the drain.
3) (optional) Work as a latching mechanism for the security cable. Some customers like to latch the unit to the side of the manhole, in case of fast flowing current loosening up the installed unit.

Make sure that your drains aren’t collapsed or cracked. In such cases, it’s strongly advised that you contact a professional drainage company to come and deal with the drainage issues.

Ensure that the Rat Blocker is fitted upright and not tilted. This is important as it may affect the proper flow of sewage.

After preparation and locating the correct drain run, the next step is to install the rat blockers in the drains.”

Screw on the nut and bolt to the rat blocker unit (whichever way you decide to install the unit, the nut and bolt should be outside of the pipes)
Prepare the rat blocker unit and push the unit into the drain outlet.
Most people use their hands to secure the rat blockers. This is when the inspection chamber is at arm’s length. Otherwise you may require an installation pole.
Do not use excessive force to fit the Rat Blocker into the drain. If the unit does not fit or you are struggling to squeeze it in, then you can compress the rat blockers unit so it can get a better fitting into the drainage pipe
Likewise, If you find the fitting a bit loose in the drains, you can try and pull it apart slightly to achieve a better fitting. Please make sure you wear gloves and use appropriate tools for this.

Test the rat blocker is securely fitted so that it can not be moved out of position easily.
Test the rat blocker installation by flushing a chunk of toilet paper down your toilet. Watch the toilet paper along with the water passing through the unit. This ensures the rat blocker is perfectly installed.
Now that you have installed and tested the installation it’s good to go. It is a non-return valve and will do its job to prevent rats from entering your drains and your property.
